Simple push-button programming lets you quickly enter dosing amount and frequency. The push-button controller is easy to set-up. The pump can also be used to add water to compensate for evaporation. You can dose pH buffers, calcium supplements, two-part additives, fertilizers, trace elements, amino acids and more. The dosing pump is capable of precise dispensing liquid aquarium supplements from 1 milliliter up to 1,999 milliliters. Often the entire lighting, dosing and filtration system can be controlled with a wireless app from home, office or anywhere there is an internet connection. This modular system allows many devices to be controlled by a single “brain” module. Modular dosing pumps are more advanced, requiring connection to a separate control module. Stand-alone dosing pumps have built-in capabilities that allow for programming the dose rate and timing. Today’s designs fall into two categories. The amount of liquid added with each pump cycle depends on the diameter of the hose inside the peristaltic pump and the duration of the pump cycle. The action of the rollers serves to gently pump fluids through the pump in a reliable, consistent flow rate. As the hose is pinched by the roller, fluid is forced through the tube. As the rotor turns, the rollers press on a flexible hose inside the pump housing.

This type of pump consists of a series of rollers attached to a central rotor. All dosing systems use a peristaltic pump design. Today we can enjoy the quiet reliability of purpose-built aquarium dosing pumps that cost far less than the early models. Fortunately, aquarium product manufacturers worked to develop dosing pumps designed specifically for the aquarium hobby. Replacement parts were hard to find and very costly. Because these dosing pumps were not designed for aquarium use, they required lots of adjustment to make them work. They were large, heavy, noisy and very expensive. When dosing pumps were first introduced to the aquarium hobby, they were nothing more than industrial and medical devices. The aquatic plants will always have a supply of carbon to stimulate lush growth. Daily additions of liquid carbon (CO2) is easy when it is managed by a dosing pump. A small daily dose of nutrients gives the plants what they need without creating nutrient-rich water that causes algae problems. Too much fertilizer at one time will over-stimulate algae growth. The idea is to keep the plant growth maximized to out-compete algae growth. You can even use the pump to add freshwater to compensate for evaporation.įreshwater planted aquariums can use a dosing pump to add essential plant nutrients like phosphate, nitrate, iron and essential trace elements. Other additives include proprietary blends of amino acids, vitamins and potassium. These elements include strontium, iodine, iron, copper and manganese. Many reef aquarists are concerned that essential trace and bio-elements can drop to growth-limiting levels. If there are not enough minerals in the water, coral growth slows down to unnatural levels. Marine invertebrates extract these minerals from the aquarium water to create calcium and magnesium skeletal mass, shell material, and encrusting algae biomass. The live corals, clams encrusting coralline algae and other reef-building organisms need a steady supply of calcium and magnesium.
